Dear Parents
Welcome back to Term 3. I am very happy to join the wonderful community at STAPS. I come from the green hills of South Gippsland where I live on a small farm. I have many animals and breed Australian Shepherds as my outside school passion. I look forward to getting to know you all in the coming months.
I know that the situation in our state creates much worry in our hearts and minds. Please reach out if you need someone to talk too; friends, family, teachers, the leadership team here, myself, medical professionals or the Church. Sometimes when things seem dark we need a friendly voice to help us see the light and find our way forward.
Our teachers have been planning hard over the past few days to improve the remote learning experience for families and children. You can find more detail about this further on in the newsletter. I would like to remind you of a couple of points though. You are supervising your child's learning not having to teach them. We know many of you will also be working from home and have your jobs to complete. If your child is finding the work stressful, hard or cannot understand the task please let the class teacher know what the problem is so that the work can be adjusted.
The government set 3 hours as a suitable amount of learning to be done each day. This can be done in one block or spread out. You need to develop a timetable that works for your family situation. If your child is a fast finisher please encourage them to read. Research shows that children that read books each day have a bigger vocabulary and broader understanding of concepts. Perhaps find a book that you loved as a child and share that with your child. Reading takes us to a new and exciting place while we are confined in our homes.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all as you continue to work from home and prepare your children for remote learning.
Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Romans 12:12

Term 3 Parent Information for Remote Learning.
Recording Student Attendance
Every morning from 7am parents will get an email. This will have a link to a google form where parents need to click whether their child/ren is onsite at school, offsite remote learning or absent from learning. If absent from learning a reason will need to be given. Please submit this by 9am. Parents who do not complete this link will be called by administration staff so that all children are accounted for.
Borrowing of Devices
Ipads and chrome books will be available at the front office for families whose children do not have a device. User agreements must be signed before taking a device and a copy of this will be given to parents at this time.
Amount of Learning
All students have different approaches to learning and will adjust to remote learning in various ways. The government has communicated that schools will provide approximately 3 hours of learning per day. However, if children are finished earlier than this and they wish to complete additional tasks, please email the teacher. If your child is facing challenges or taking longer than 3 hours to complete the work, please email the classroom teacher. Ideally the learning should be in several blocks throughout the day where children can have time off screens, engage in physical activity and take a brain break. These may take the form of unpacking the dishwasher, folding the washing or playing with siblings.
We can all do our jobs in remote learning. We know that each of us has a part to play and in these times, we need to adjust the way in which we work. The following points will help us all to understand what we need to do during this time to help the students succeed.
TEACHERS WILL:
Teachers will put work on Seesaw by 8pm the night before each school day.
Teachers will identify ten pieces of work each week, that will be marked with a treasure chest.
Teachers will give students feedback on the treasure chest tasks.
Teachers will work with students on google meet at set times in the week.
Teachers will respond to parents emails or phone calls during school hours only (8:45am - 4:30pm).
PARENTS CAN:
Parents can help their children with their work if needed, but try not to do the task for them.
Parents can contact the teacher via e-mail or by phoning the school, if there are problems on understanding or accessing the work on Seesaw,
Parents can help their child find the treasure chest symbol and help/check that their child has handed this work in on the Seesaw journal each day.
Parents can support their child by setting up a work space in a communal area of the home.
CHILDREN WILL:
Children will send the teacher work in the right Seesaw journal.
Children will look for the treasure chest picture to make sure they hand in this work when the teacher has asked them to.
Children will follow the user agreement when they use the internet.
Children can ask their classroom or specialist teacher questions about the work on Seesaw.
SPECIALIST LESSONS:
Music, Art, Japanese and Sport will be on a set day for each level.
On this day, the specialist teachers will be giving work on Seesaw and responding to children.
Teachers will identify ten pieces of work that will be marked with a treasure chest.
The treasure chest tasks are key learning pieces that will demonstrate the child’s learning and feed into assessment and reporting.
Teachers will give students feedback on the treasure chest tasks.
Parents can contact the specialist teacher via email or by phoning the school.
